Here’s what people are talking about

I’m a big fan of Penang’s assam laksa, but, sadly, we don’t get enough of it here.

So before I’m able to get my fix in Penang, I’ll head to Granny Q Penang Lemak Laksa’s pop-up – which runs from April 29 at Rappu Handroll Bar in Duxton.

Instead of the usual tangy Penang assam laksa, Granny Q’s version features a rich, spicy, coconut milk broth that is infused with fresh aromatics such as mint, torch ginger, red onions, cucumber and pineapple.

Gourmands would agree that we can never have enough laksa stalls in Singapore. That is why we can’t wait for the popular Penang laksa stall, Granny Q Lemak Laksa stall, to open its first overseas outlet in Singapore this year. Opened in 2022, the family-run stall run by Esther Heng is famed for its signature GQ Penang Lemak Laksa, and is made using the original recipe that her grandmother created in the 1920s. It’s a unique type of laksa that features a rich, spicy coconut milk broth infused with mint leaves, torch ginger, cucumbers and pineapples.

Most folks associate Penang laksa with the famous assam-style variety, but have you heard of Penang laksa lemak? Think of it as a cross between the clear tamarind and prawn paste-spiked fish broth noodle dish that the Malaysian state is famous for, and the coconut milk-rich kind common in Singapore. Now, you can get your paws on some at the Granny Q pop-up, which starts 29 April and will run for a few months till further notice. Who and what is Granny Q, you ask? It’s a humble laksa hawker stall from Pulau Tikus, a small town in Penang. The eatery is run by five siblings and named after their late grandmother, Granny Kew. Even though it only opened in 2022, their lone menu item of laksa lemak is made with their grandmother’s treasured recipe which according to them, dates back to the 1920s. The dish is described on their website as a sort of “Nonya-Thai laksa”. Interesting.

Unlike the other brands that have been hitting our shores (think global big names such as Cinnabon and Mr Donut), this new entrant is one that hits closer to home: Granny Q Penang Lemak Laksa, a popular laksa eatery that’s located in Malaysia’s food capital Penang.
